The Railway Museum
Train fans, all aboard! We’re off to one of Japan's largest railway worlds
Opened in October 2007, this museum is one of the largest railway museums in Japan. The south building was opened in 2018, and the permanent exhibition in the main building was fully renovated. The inside of the museum is divided into five stations—the Rolling Stock Station, Science Station, Job Station, Future Station, and the History Station—telling the story of railways from a variety of perspectives.
There are 36 rolling stock on display at the Rolling Stock Station, located on the first and second floors of the main building. Manufactured in England in 1871, locomotive No. 1 was the first steam locomotive to undergo a completion inspection in Japan in 1872.
In one corner of the Rolling Stock Station is the D51 Simulator, which uses the cab section of the D51-426. You can experience operating the train with the controls at your hands. The cost is 510 yen per session (you need to be selected in the Railway Museum Raffle App).
The C57 steam locomotive sits on the central turntable. Since its manufacture in 1940, it has been active on all major railway sections throughout the country apart from Shikoku. It was nicknamed "Lady" for its elegant appearance.
The C57 steam locomotive has boxpok driving wheels with a diameter of 1,750 mm. You can see just how big the wheels are when we stand next to them.
You can easily take a commemorative photo by scanning the QR code found in the museum with your smartphone and visiting the Machi Kame website. You can even download your photo with the train in the background (separate fee required) ♪
We also found the nostalgic 0 Series Shinkansen! This Shinkansen is known for its round nose and lights. You can even enter the car and see the seats.
Model trains running in all directions! An impressive sight to see
When we went up to the second floor, we found one of the largest railway dioramas in Japan. HO scale model trains running along tracks that total some 1,200 meters is a sight to see! There are also demonstration programs with commentary by staff nine times a day.
You can see recreations of the Shinkansen running on the central viaduct and moments like the separation and connection of the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa and the Akita Shinkansen Komachi trains.
This is the Job Station on the first floor of the south building. You can learn about not only drivers, conductors, and station attendants but also other various jobs related to trains. The E514 and 411 Shinkansen cars greet visitors at the center of the floor.
Become a driver or conductor yourself! Experience your dream
The chance to experience so many things related to trains is what makes The Railway Museum so appealing. With the Conductor Simulator, you can experience the job of a conductor, who ensures the safety of trains with the driver on the Series 209. The cost is 510 yen per session (you need to be selected in the Railway Museum Raffle App).
The Miniature Driving Train is very popular among children. You can drive a small train on your own, passing through Manseibashi, Iidamachi, and Ryogoku-bashi stations. One lap takes you 300 meters around. The cost is 510 yen per ride (you need to be selected in the Railway Museum Raffle App).
Next, we stopped by the rooftop Panorama Deck. The observation space provides a spectacular panoramic view stretching about 300 degrees. From there you can also see the trains running on the Shinkansen tracks and conventional lines nearby. The Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa train flew by during our shoot!
Make sure to check out the stylish train merchandise
With restaurants and shops in the museum, you can take a break as well as enjoy some shopping. There are many unique items and train merchandise at the museum shop TRAINART. The cut-out Shinkansen baumkuchen (680 yen) printed with E5 Series Hayabusa and E6 Series Komachi designs are a popular choice.

Blessings for couples tying the knot! Head to the best power spot in the Kanto region
This is the head shrine for Hikawa shrines, which number about 280 in the Kanto region. One of the oldest shrines in Japan with a history of around 2,500 years, it is said that the name “Omiya ” is derived from the fact that Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine was once worshipped as “Oinaru Miyai.”
The Hikawa Shrine Road, which extends about 2 km and leads to the main shrine, is lined with 650 beautiful zelkova trees. The tree canopy means it is like walking through a green tunnel.
This romon gate was built in 1940. The vermilion gate is beautiful against the green of the trees.

The main shrine is now in sight. The enshrined deities are: Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who became a hero after defeating the serpent Yamata-no-Orochi; his wife Inadahime-no-Mikoto; and Onamuchi-no-Mikoto, who appears in the White Hare of Inaba. The three main gods that appear in Izumo Mythology are enshrined here.
We pray quietly, “May we have a strong connection...”
Because Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Inadahime-no-Mikoto were happily married, it is also known as a power spot for marriage. The shrine is known for many other blessings, such as the safety of one’s household, thriving business, and your earnest prayers being answered.
There are many more highlights on the grounds, such as Munakata Shrine, which enshrines the god of water and navigation, and the Snake Pond, which was once considered a forbidden area closed to the general public. Take a leisurely stroll while feeling the power of nature and the gods.
