Enjoy the finest gourmet food and the latest in leisure as you explore the Forest Capital and lovely seaside towns!
The stylish and innovative culture fostered by Date Masamune lives on in the city of Sendai even today. Our hotel staff recommends an itinerary that takes you to Matsushima, which is one of the top three scenic views in Japan, as well as sightseeing spots associated with Lord Date Masamune. Of course it also includes beef tongue, gourmet seafood, and leisure spots that have sprung up along the seaside.
JR Fruit Park Sendai Arahama
Harvest fruits and vegetables year-round at a fun agricultural theme park!
This fruit-centric theme park opened in the Arahama area of Sendai in March 2021. Situated on about 8.5 hectares of land, the park grows more than 150 varieties of fruit in eight categories year-round. Visitors can enjoy a variety of fruit picking experiences, including blueberries in June, figs and grapes in September, apples in October.
Strawberry picking is from January to late June. You can compare and taste four varieties of strawberries, the Mō Ikko, the Ama Ekubo, the Beni Hoppe, and even the Niko Niko Berry, which was developed by the Miyagi Prefecture Horticultural Research Institute over a period of 12 years.
Their strawberries are grown on elevated planters for easy picking from a standing position. The wide, barrier-free rows are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Have fun finding and picking the biggest strawberries!
The motivation behind the development of the Niko Niko Berry was the desire to return a sense of prosperity to this area. The exceptional fruits are bright red and glossy, with a lovely balance of tartness and sweetness.
Hotel-produced sweets from the harvested fruit
Once you’ve had your fill, head to Les Pommes, a café and restaurant headed by the chef of Hotel Metropolitan Sendai. Their original menu makes use of fruits and vegetables grown at the theme park. Their pudding à la mode for (¥800) is an old-fashioned pudding, slightly firm and smooth, topped with fruit and homemade compote. We also recommend the strawberry squash drink (¥600), which the restaurant created in collaboration with the Coca-Cola Company.
On a nice day, the terrace seats are lovely. You can also enjoy dishes that are unique to Miyagi, like chicken curry made with local Shinrin-dori chicken or keema curry made with beef tongue.
An encounter with the official mascot, FruPa-chan! In addition to a fresh fruit and vegetable market, a processing workshop room, and a training room, the park also offers fun weekend and holiday events, like vegetable harvesting and handmade crafting experiences.

Ōsaki Hachimangū Shrine
A dazzling shrine built by the order of Lord Date Masamune
Ōsaki Hachimangū Shrine was founded by Lord Date Masamune in 1607 as the Grand Shrine of Sendai. The feudal lords who succeeded him and the people living in the castle vicinity would come to the shrine to worship the god of good luck and warding off evil, calamity and good fortune, victory, and easy childbirth. Locals call it "Hachiman-sama," and it has also become known as a spiritual hotspot.
You can see the first and second torii gates from National Route 48, and once you pass through, there’s a large stone staircase of about 100 steps. The shrine grounds are surrounded by dense groves of trees, creating the atmosphere of a sanctuary. Climb all the way up the stone steps, and you’ll see the third torii gate, from which the approach leads straight to the shrine building.
First, bow your head and worship quietly. The shrine is built in the gongen-zukuri style, meaning that there is a room built on a stone foundation between the main hall and the worship hall, which share one roof. It is the oldest surviving structure from the Azuchi Momoyama period (1568–1600) in the whole country. It is also designated as a National Treasure Building.
There is a large triangular gable on the front of the worship hall and a stunning curved gable on the pent roof. The colorful sculptures and dazzling metal fittings are beautiful, conveying the majesty of the Date clan to this day.
Colorful paper lanterns dedicated to the shrine are hung along the approach.
The Matsukawa Daruma dolls, evoking the sky and sea of Sendai
A large Matsukawa Daruma doll is enshrined in the Kagura Hall, a Nagatoko style architecture. This doll, with its body painted ultramarine and its eyes already drawn, is beloved here in Sendai. It provides protection from all directions, and it contains people’s prayers for family safety and sound health. You can find small Matsukawa Daruma dolls for sale here as gifts.

Gyūtan Keyaki Sendai Ichibanchō Main Location
Thick-cut beef tongue—so meaty, tender, and delicious
This new restaurant opened on February 9, 2023, rebranded from the Sendai beef tongue restaurant Keyaki. This restaurant serves beef tongue from carefully selected, exclusively grain-fed cattle. The cuts are so rare that they only amount to about 750 grams per cow. The thick slices of tongue are grilled rare, bringing a new dynamic to the famous Sendai beef tongue scene.
The set meal with three extra-thick cuts (¥3300) lets you compare different varieties: approx. 3-cm thick cuts of deluxe tongue, 1.8-cm cuts of premium tongue, and 2-cm cuts of lean tongue meat cooked at low heat. The flavor develops as you chew, and the meat is surprisingly tender. Their grilled tongue comes with five different seasonings, including salted lemon and the shop’s original Crispy Beef Tongue Soy Sauce, which is made from meat scraps that aren’t used in grilled tongue meals.
They have both tables and counter seats, making it comfortable for solo female diners. It was so exciting to get to try the absolute finest beef tongue!
Discover your favorite condiment and savor the delicious taste of the lean meat
You can also try the Beef Tongue Himatsubushi Meal for ¥3300: thick slabs of lean beef tongue that have been grilled, cut into bite-sized pieces, and served over rice. First, add the grated yam on the meat, and finally pour the dashi broth over the rice and add aromatics to your taste.
The interior has a bright and natural atmosphere, with soft Japanese-style lighting and understated wood tables.
The restaurant is located about 15 minutes on foot from Hotel Metropolitan Sendai. Their extra-thick beef tongue is the talk of the town. It’s great as a reward after working hard on a business trip, or to recharge your traveler’s energy with a moment of luxury.

Hotel Metropolitan Sendai
A sophisticated space that embodies Sendai’s moniker, the Forest Capital
Just one minute on foot from the west exit of Sendai Station, this luxury hotel has a great location. It features spaces inspired by Sendai and Date Masamune as well as dishes made with locally grown ingredients for local consumption. Just staying here is enough to understand why Sendai is known as the Forest Capital.
The 19th and 20th floors are the executive floors. The rooms are outfitted with eye-friendly BioLights, and some of the beds have airweave mattresses. The rooms are in a class all their own, with luxury twin rooms inspired by the concept of the Forest Capital and Japanese style rooms with floors and furnishings making abundant use of zelkova and paulownia wood, creating a relaxing space with a distinctly Tohoku interior.
All rooms on the executive floor are fully equipped with a bath, a full-room shower area, and a rain shower, and the bath amenities are made with Hakurakusei sake extract. They also have a Simmons bed and a writing desk to keep you comfortable.
The lobby atrium stretches to the second floor, with two impressive pillars inspired by Miyagi Prefecture’s zelkova trees.
In one corner of the lobby, visitors are greeted by Musubimaru, the Sendai and Miyagi tourism PR character, and a commemorative photo spot with a face panel.
Stand behind the panel and see yourself transformed into hotel staff! “Huh? Is this how I always look?”
You can have breakfast in the restaurant or from room service, depending on your mood that morning. To sample a variety of dishes, head to the breakfast buffet at the Serenity restaurant on the second floor. The buffet has about 80 dishes from Japanese and Western cuisine alike, and it features Miyagi delicacies made with plenty of local ingredients. Be sure not to miss the local shisomaki (miso paste wrapped in perilla leaves) or sasa kamaboko (fish cakes in the shape of bamboo leaves).
The egg dishes are made with Taketori Tamago, a branded egg from Shiroishi Zao in Miyagi Prefecture. The chef cooks omelets at the perfect temperature to make them fluffy and silky.
For dessert, enjoy a cup of tea with local sweets like Sendai Makoron and zunda mochi (rice cakes with crushed green soybeans). The restaurant also offers takeout coffee which you can bring back to your room to relax until checkout.
The Kuru Tohoku set (¥2000) features sweets from all six prefectures of the region. These gluten-free baked confectioneries are made with representative rice flours from each prefecture and filled with a nougat-walnut mixture. They also incorporate prefectural specialties, like Miyagi’s shisomaki and Akita’s iburigakko (smoked daikon pickles), which blend with western confectionery to create a surprising harmony. Wouldn’t hotel-produced sweets make a great souvenir?

Kirin Brewery Sendai
See, touch, taste, and experience the delicious flavor of Kirin Ichiban Shibori beer!
Kirin Brewery Sendai is the only brewery in the Tohoku region that offers tours. The brewery was renovated in January 2022, and the tour allows you to experience Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer with all five senses, using immersive video, a malt and hops tasting/aroma experience, and samples of the first pressing.
First, you learn about the history of Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer through an immersive video. Next, at the brewery, you can learn about the ingredients of beer: malt, which you can sample, and hops, which you can smell.
The malt has a toasty fragrance and mild sweetness, and the hops have an invigorating fruity aroma.
Hops are an important component that gives beer its bitterness and aroma. Kirin also makes beer with hops grown in Tono, Iwate Prefecture.
After watching the preparation process, you get to actually drink and compare the first and second pressings. The first pressing (or “ichiban shibori baku-ju,” which gives the beer its name) has more body, and the rich sweetness of the wheat shines through. Apparently Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer is made using only the first pressing to bring out the great taste of the wheat.
You can also see huge fermentation and storage tanks from inside the brewery.
In the part of the tour that covers the fermentation and storage mechanisms, you can use a touch panel and animation to learn about the movements of yeast.
We can’t wait to taste our Ichiban Shibori draft beer!
It’s fun to do a tasting after learning the secrets of the brewing process and what makes the beer so tasty. The Brewery Draft Master will pour you the best Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer, paying special attention to the freshness, the condition of the server, the glass, and the pouring method.
The tasting includes one glass of Ichiban Shibori draft beer as well as three other offerings from the Ichiban Shibori series. Compare the rich aromas and flavors of Kirin Premium, Kuronama(black), and other varieties.
The tasting also comes with an original snack from the brewery: Kakinotane Rice Crackers with Beer Yeast. These popular snacks are also available (¥650 for five bags) at the Kirin Factory Shop, which is located on the premises.
The shop also sells stationery, sweets, and other brewery goods. The Ichiban Shibori Beer Jelly Chocolate (¥1290) has a sophisticated flavor that blends sweet chocolate and Ichiban Shibori-flavored jelly. You can also get Kirin bottlecap-shaped magnets (¥880 for four).

Miyagi Prefecture Matsushima Rikyu
A new landmark with spectacular views of Matsushima
With its calm waters dotted with more than 260 rocky islands, Matsushima Bay is one of the top three scenic spots in all of Japan. We visited the much-talked-about Miyagi Prefecture Matsushima Rikyu (Imperial Villa), which opened in Matsushima in 2020.
The two-story wooden building houses a variety of facilities, including the Miyazaki Prefecture Matsushima Rikyu Museum, where visitors can learn the history of Matsushima’s origins, and Rikyu Hall, which hosts interesting workshops, as well as a gourmet café and a souvenir shop. The rooftop garden offers spectacular views of Matsushima in chairs that wouldn’t be out of place at a tropical resort.
The Kimono rental shop has a selection of 100 kimono available to rent. Their rental sets include accessories like obi sashes and hair ornaments, so you don’t need to bring a thing. Enjoy Matsushima sightseeing in adorable Japanese clothes!
In Rikyu Garden, you can take in gorgeous seasonal scenery with Japanese maples and yoshino cherry trees. In the center of the garden is the Happy Pool, which is said to represent the scenery of Matsushima.
Take a little stroll along the water. In the evening, a seven-color illumination envelops the garden in an ethereal atmosphere.
Offering more than 30 handmade crafting experiences and activities!
After your walk, try your hand at painting kokeshi dolls in a workshop at Rikyu Hall (¥1500 for 30 minutes). Of the five kokeshi schools of Miyagi, this workshop teaches Naruko Kokeshi and Sakunami Kokeshi. You can draw their hair and facial expressions with a brush or a marker.
Once you’re done, you might find that your kokeshi doll somehow resembles you! The facility offers more than 30 workshop experience options unique to Matsushima, like candles with oyster shells, fluorite accessories, or food samples.
Savor the best views and the best ingredients in the rooftop garden
In the rooftop garden, Picnic in the Sky boasts spectacular daytime scenery and evening views of the moon and night sky.
At Hamayaki Grill Rikyu, you can enjoy the popular dining experience of grilling your own fresh-caught seafood and Japan X pork, a Miyagi brand. If the weather is good, you can enjoy a rooftop barbecue. If you want to spend a full day sightseeing in Matsushima, have your lunch here and savor their extra-large scallops and seafood skewers. Sushi Tetsu
Sushi prepared with feeling, bringing Shiogama’s sushi to the whole country
Shiogama Port boasts one of the largest hauls of raw tuna in all of Japan. The city of Shiogama is dotted with famous sushi restaurants offering unique dishes made with fresh seafood. Among them, Sushi Tetsu played a key role in spreading Shiogama's delicious sushi throughout the country.
We felt a little intimidated entering the restaurant, but then we were greeted by master chef Shirahata’s kind smiling face. The Sushi Tetsu Monogatari meal (¥4580) is served on Arita ware ceramics. It includes 11 pieces of sushi, including Shiogama's Pacific bluefin fatty tuna, sweet shrimp, surf clam, and abalone, plus Japanese omelet.
Watching the master and artisan chefs making sushi on the other side of the counter makes for true sushi entertainment. When I asked about the proper way to eat, the master chef answered me kindly, saying, "Well, the refined way is to grip the toppings and rice together with your chopsticks, flip it downward 90 degrees, and dip the toppings in your soy sauce. But I think it's best for people to eat the way that feels most comfortable and natural for them.”
The Sushi Tetsu Monogatari meal can be served two ways: as hand-pressed (nigiri) or over sushi rice (chirashi).
The stunning chirashi Sushi Tetsu Monogatari (¥4580) features tuna, sea urchin, and surf clams from Shiogama beautifully arranged over a bowl of vinegared rice. You’ll be amazed by the rich sweetness of the shrimp, the way the tuna melts in your mouth, and the freshness and flavor of the seafood.
We also recommend the otsumami assortment if you want to try signature dishes like tender simmered octopus and grilled abalone liver. You can choose from their selection of local sake varieties from around Miyagi, like Urakasumi and Abekan from Shiogama, to pair drinks with your meal.
Sushi Tetsu is a famous Shiogama restaurant that always attracts long lines. They also have an S-Pal Sendai location so you can experience their famous food in the midst of city sightseeing.

Urakasumi Sake Gallery
A Shiogama brewery spreading information about sake culture
Founded in 1724 under the name Saura, this brewery has been making sake since the 1800s as the sacred sake brewery of Shiogama Shrine, which was revered by Lord Date, the feudal lord of the Sendai domain. Their super high-grade sake was named Urakasumi during the Taisho period (1912–1926), and the brand name was unified to Urakasumi during the Showa period (1926–1989). It came to be known all over the country as one of the best local sake varieties from Miyagi.
Attached to the brewery you can find the Urakasumi Sake Gallery, which displays and sells ceramic and glass sake vessels as well as Urakasumi products that are only available locally and in Miyagi Prefecture. Twice a day, a Kura Guide gives tours of the picturesque buildings and the brewery, teaching about their history.
The grounds are dotted with storehouses built in different eras. The Kyoho Storehouse, said to have been built around the late Edo (1603–1867) or early Meiji period (1868–1912), has many points of interest, including a sake grove (with balls of cedar hanging in the eaves) and wooden sake-making buckets. Another highlight is the building entryway, with its relocated and restored pent roof from atop the stairs of a hōrenji temple, which flourished during the Edo period as a branch shrine of Shiogama Shrine.
You can see inside the storehouse from the outside. They brew their sake using a revival of the traditional wooden bucket style.
The temperature inside the Kyoho Storehouse is controlled by taking cold air in through a door on the north side and letting hot air out through a skylight on the south side.
An array of attractive limited-edition Urakasumi sakes
The building where the shop operates is said to have been built between the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. It sells a wide range of Urakasumi products, including seasonal products and area-exclusive Miyagi sake varieties. Sake vessels made by artists living in Miyagi Prefecture and original goods with the Urakasumi logo are also popular.
Their comparison set includes a package of three types of sake: Junmai Urakasumi, Karakuchi Urakasumi, and Botoru Urakasumi (¥1870). The package is modeled after the storehouse exterior, making it an adorable souvenir. Sake cups are sold separately for ¥550.
